HGA's Convergence 2012 Long Beach
(Monday, July 16 through Saturday, July 21, 2012)
I will be teaching the following at HGA's Convergence® 2012 Long Beach conference:
Chameleon Ply-Split Basket
UA102 One-Day Studio Class on Wednesday, July 18, 9:00am - noon and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Start this basket by stringing 4-ply paper cords on a knitting needle, and split a square base. Then pull cords one-by-one through a long decorative cord to create the sides. This decorative cord changes value along its length: LLLL, LLLD, LLDD, LDDD, DDDD. Linda will demo how this cord is made. Pull the cords back through the rim for a neat finish. Each basket will be unique!
Waffle Ply-Split Basket
UB108 One-Day Studio Class on Thursday, July 19, 9:15am - 12:15pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Start this basket by stringing 2-ply, 2-color paper cords on a knitting needle. To make the basket, split the cords in POT (plain oblique twining) with a full twist between splittings. This gives a "waffle" texture, with a different color dominant on each side. A long cord creates a striped rim. End with decorative knots on the rim cord. A larger version would make a cute garden hat.
Lined Triangles Ply-Split Basket
UC117 One-Day Studio Class on Friday, July 20, 9:00am - noon and 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Here’s an exciting new concept for surface design in ply-splitting. The 4-ply cords for this basket have been made by arranging colors in each ply following a threading diagram for warp-twined tablet weaving. String up the lengthwise cords on a knitting needle in the correct order. When crosswise cords split the lengthwise cords, the design appears! Cords are pulled through the rim for a neat finish.
How to Make Ply-Split Baskets: The Story Behind the Book
S703 Morning Seminar on Saturday, July 21, 9:00am - 10:15am
How to Make Ply-Split Baskets is the first book on this subject. Join author Linda Hendrickson in a conversation about the baskets in the book. Linda will discuss the designs, structures, shapes, finishes, and processes that led to each finished basket. She will also demonstrate how the different cords used in the book are made. Bring your finished or unfinished ply-split baskets and share your experiences with the class.
Cordmaking with a 4-Hook Cordmaker
S802 Afternoon Seminar on Saturday, July 21, 1:00pm - 2:30pm
Learn all about making plied cords for ply-splitting or other purposes. Cords are made from "linear elements" -- yarn, ribbon, dental floss, fishing line, torn fabric strips -- you name it! Linda will demonstrate ways to make a variety of plain and decorative cords, and then you can give it a try. Bring any linear elements that you would like to see made into a cord -- let’s push the envelope!
