Cary will bring samples of braided bracelets in various widths and different metals for inspiration. Start out by learning to straighten coiled copper wire. Then cut the wire into the number of pieces that you want for your bracelet, and put them in a vise. Cary will then demonstrate the technique for braiding the wire, and guide you as you braid. Finish your bracelet with beaded ends. The class will include a discussion of finishing techniques and patinas.

Maggie learned this technique from a ship's rigger. You may have been among the crowds at Art in the Pearl who watched in fascination as Maggie demonstrated how to make a mat from a single strand of rope. For this class, Maggie will bring jigs that are used to make doormats, and will lead you step-by-step through the process. Using a single strand of 3/8" manila rope, you will weave over and under tube-covered dowels in the jig to create the lengthwise part of the mat. Then remove the jig with the dowels, leaving the tubes in place. Replace the tubes one by one with the remaining rope. It's magic! Go home with a finished doormat.

About the instructor: Maggie's interest in fiber arts goes back to childhood, when she learned knotwork from her sailor father. Her 40 years of teaching includes basketry, tatting, Chinese knotting, macrame, and ply-splitting. She has a special interest in rugmaking and using recycled materials.
