Ply-Split Table Mats

Table mat designs can also be used as the base of a basket. A small mat is a practical project for beginners.

Star mat

This mat is made from 30 wool cords, about 1/4" diameter and 15" long. The mat measures about 9" across. It starts out with a 5-pointed star center (based on a design by the very talented Jim Pochert). Once all the cords have been added, they start crossing each other, and necessarily fan out in order to keep the mat flat. Since the cords are somewhat separated, the color of the splitters peeks through the splittees. Finally, all of the ends split one long cord which provides the outer star shape. All ends are then unplied and trimmed.

The dark blue cords emphasize the outer star shape. All other cords in the mat split the dark blue cords to create this outline. The placement of color and value creates a stained glass effect.
