Ply-Split Lotus Basket

[ply-split lotus basket] Using prepared cords, even if you have no previous ply-split braiding experience, you can complete a beautiful little basket like this one in a two-day workshop. I began designing this basket in 2001 after Jim Pochert (ply-splitter, tablet-weaver, and doctor) brought a box-full of his ply-split baskets to my Star Ornament class at Convergence 2000. I was so inspired by the star base in some of those baskets. The Lotus Basket begins with Jim's star base, and then travels off in its own directions. The one shown here is made of 1/8" diameter cotton cords, and is approximately 2" high x 6-3/4" wide, including fringe. This is a good introduction to the three-dimensional possibilities of ply-split braiding. During class, I will show some of my other ply-split baskets, discuss cordmaking variables and the use of different fibers, and and will model my ply-split hats.
