Introduction to Ply-Splitting

Ply-splitting is slow, meditative, and completely portable. I will begin with a little history, leading you from the sturdy traditional ply-split goat-hair girths and camel necklaces made by men of the Indian desert, and progressing to my own baskets, hats, bags, jewelry, and ornaments. I will also demonstrate cordmaking, using a drill with a single hook, and a 4-hook twister.

Using prepared cords and a gripfid or latch hook, make a curvy ply-split braid on a keyring using a structure called SCOT (single-course oblique twining. Then you can make a spiral SCOT ornament, or try the more challenging braid with an arrowhead design which combines SCOT and twined linkings.
